Psychological injuries are now your legal problem — whether you're ready or not.

The WA Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 introduced Regulations 55A–55D — making it a legal duty for every PCBU and their supervisors to identify, assess, and control psychosocial hazards.

Ignorance is no longer a defence. Psychological injury claims average 30 weeks off work — over four times longer than the average for all workplace injury claims. Add FIFO rosters, fatigue, and remote site isolation, and the exposure on a mine or civil project is higher than almost anywhere else.

This course gives supervisors the knowledge, tools, and language to lead confidently — and compliantly.

Mining and civil construction training workshop

Built for the people who run the site

This isn't a generic HR course. It's built from the ground up for WA mining and civil construction — the language, the scenarios, the legislation.

Supervisors

Surface and underground supervisors, and civil site supervisors, responsible for day-to-day crew management and wellbeing.

Team Leaders

Crew leads, shift supervisors, leading hands and foremen who set the tone for team culture on every shift.

Site & Project Managers

SSEs, mine managers, and civil construction project managers with due diligence obligations under Section 27.

WHS & HR Professionals

Safety reps, WHS advisors, and HR professionals responsible for psychosocial risk management across the operation.

Scenarios drawn from real mine sites and civil projects

Every case study is grounded in the pressures of FIFO rosters, remote sites, and high-tempo civil projects — not a generic office example with the names changed.

FIFO Fatigue

The 21-day swing that nearly broke a crew

A leading hand pushes an underperforming crew through the back half of an extended swing without flagging fatigue as a hazard. Participants use the Decision Audit to identify where the roster decision itself became the risk — and what a Reg 55A-compliant response looks like.

Civil Construction

Program pressure on a fast-tracked earthworks package

A civil project manager is under pressure to hit a compressed program milestone and starts running double shifts with minimal notice. The workshop walks through the hazard categories from the WA Code of Practice and builds a control plan the PM can actually use on Monday.

Underground Isolation

A quiet crew member and a missed early warning

An underground crew member becomes withdrawn over several shifts. Using the PFA framework (Prepare, Look, Listen, Link), participants practise the exact conversation a supervisor needs to have — and where it sits inside the site's welfare escalation pathway.

Remote Site

Camp culture and the after-hours grey zone

Tension between two crew members spills from the crib room into camp accommodation. Participants apply the four-step risk assessment to a hazard that doesn't stop at the boom gate — and map out where site policy, HR and the Decision Audit intersect.

What you'll cover in one day

Six modules plus two hands-on workshops. You leave with tools you can use on shift Monday.

01

Setting the Scene

The scale of the problem in WA mining and civil construction. FIFO context, psychosocial risk data, and why psychological health is now a legal priority — not a soft skill.

02

The Legal Framework

WHS Act 2020 Sections 19, 27, 28, 47. Regulations 55A–55D explained in plain language. What compliance looks like — and what a breach looks like.

03

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment

The psychosocial hazard categories from the WA Code of Practice. A four-step risk assessment model. Hierarchy of controls applied to psychological risk on site.

04

Decision Audit

How everyday leadership decisions — rostering, workload, program pressure — create or worsen psychosocial risk. A structured audit framework to review decisions before and after they're made.

05

Building a Psychologically Safe Crew

Psychological safety frameworks (Edmondson, Clark). The PFA model — Prepare, Look, Listen, Link. Early intervention on shift and the Traffic Light model.

Action Planning

Each participant leaves with a personal leadership action plan. Three specific commitments. A welfare pledge. 30/60/90 day check-in structure.

+ Two Applied Workshops — Mining & Civil Scenarios

Workshop 1 — Hazard Mapping: Crews map real psychosocial hazards from their own site — FIFO rosters, fatigue, remote isolation, program pressure — using the WA Code of Practice framework, and build a control plan.

Workshop 2 — Case Study Leadership: Scenario-based decision making using the FIFO swing, civil program-pressure, and underground isolation case studies above. Teams apply the Decision Audit and PFA frameworks in real time.

2Hands-On
Workshops

Built around decisions supervisors actually face on site

Workshop 1 · Hazard Mapping

Mapping your own site's pressure points

Roster patterns, fatigue windows, remote-site isolation, and high-tempo production or program targets — crews plot these against the WA Code of Practice hazard categories and leave with a site-specific control plan.

Workshop 2 · Case Study Leadership

Running the Decision Audit under pressure

Teams work through the FIFO swing and civil program-pressure case studies live, applying the Decision Audit and PFA frameworks to decide what a compliant, practical response looks like before the shift ends.

06

Pre-Decision Screen Tool

A structured decision-making framework you can use at the pit, in the crib room, or before any significant leadership call.

Real tools for the job — not just theory.

Every participant leaves with access to HoldPoint — a psychosocial toolbox, a take-home app with ten tools plus AI-assisted research to help build operational resilience one decision at a time. The same Pre-Decision Screen, Decision Audit, PSA Assessment and Action Plan tools from the course, on any device, so you can actually use what you learned when it counts on site.

  • Pre-Decision Screen

Work through the same structured decision framework from the workshop before any significant leadership call.

  • Decision Audit

Examine a management decision against psychosocial risk once it's made — mapped to Regulation 55B, saved to your history.

  • PSA Assessment

The psychosocial safety self-assessment checklist from the course, on your phone for daily use on shift.

  • 30/60/90-Day Plan

Track the leadership commitments you set on the day and revisit them as a live document, not a filed-away handout.

Built for the reality of the job, not just the regulation

Goes beyond theory with the Decision Audit — a practical tool that gets supervisors examining how their own rostering and program calls affect crew wellbeing, not just ticking a compliance box.
Backed by the HoldPoint app, so the PSA Checklist and other tools are still in your pocket on shift — not left behind in a folder after the course ends.
Built specifically around WA's WHS Act 2020 and Mines Regulations 2022, Reg 55A–55D — not a generic national template retrofitted for local rules.

A full day that doesn't waste your time

Structured for working crews and supervisors. No filler. No death-by-PowerPoint. Practical workshops, real scenarios, and tools you'll actually use.
